Abstract

The study examined the extent to which foreign direct investment in the oil sector influence economic growth in Nigeria. Although, it has been difficult to ascertain why foreign direct investment FDI in oil sector has not been able to measure up relative to other oil rich countries of the world. Nigeria has not been able to efficiently benefit adequately in this regards, it is on this premise that the work offers a practical means of addressing the phenomenon. The study covers the period 1970 -2022; the study is descriptive and quantitative in nature using statistical tools, trends, the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR), among other econometric models. The findings of the study showed a relationship among gross domestic Product, Foreign direct investment, oil exports, index of openness, employment and oil price. Finding showed that the lag value of gross domestic product has a positive but a statistically insignificant effect on economic growth in Nigeria. Oil exports have a positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria in the short-run. The analysis implies that a 1% increase in oil exports will lead to a 0.18% increase in economic growth in the economy. The paper concluded by recommended that Pragmatic mechanisms should be put in place to properly channel domestic technology ,improve on local technology and co-engage foreign and local technology for on the job training among others.

Abstract

The Nigerian government has consistently implemented economic and social policies aimed at enhancing the social welfare of individuals, which will serve as a catalyst for economic growth and development. However, the nation's low capital accumulation and rapidly growing population have rendered all of their efforts futile. Nigeria's current economic situation is not promising. This research examined Nigeria's population dynamics, savings rates, and economic growth from 1980 to 2020. This analysis establishes the presence of a long-run link between the dependent and independent variables using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) framework. The results showed that indicators of population dynamics are negatively correlated with economic growth and that throughout the research period, both short- and long-term effects of population dynamics on economic development in Nigeria were seen. On the other hand, the adverse impact is negligible in the near term but substantial in the long term. Additionally, the study's findings indicate that Nigeria's savings rate had a significant negative impact on the country's economic development over the study period, both in the short and long terms. This suggests that the percentage of GDP saved in this economy has a negative effect on economic development. The findings also showed that, over the long and short terms, population dynamics and savings in Nigeria had a positive and substantial association. As a result, it is clear from this study that Nigeria has a low savings rate since the country has not been able to capitalize on its enormous population to increase productivity and the labor force. It is sufficient to infer that the Nigerian government must make investments in the development of human capital, as this would inevitably enhance capital formation and, eventually, contribute to national growth.

Abstract

In the Nigerian context, the clause "Officer, it's the devil's work" serves as a culturally resonant defense mechanism, reflecting deeply embedded societal and religious beliefs. Hence, this paper examines the pragmatics of defense in police-suspect interrogations in Nigeria. Within Nigeria's legal and cultural context, suspects often employ language to frame their actions and provide justifications under the intense psychological pressures of interrogations. The paper adopts Grice's maxims (quality, quantity, relevance and manner) as the theoretical framework for analysis. This framework is considered appropriate as it offers a structured lens for examining the pragmatic strategies employed by suspects during interrogations. Four documented cases involving offences such as kidnapping, rape, grievous harm, and murder were purposefully selected from online news articles, social media reports, and the transcript of a recorded police-suspect interrogation video. Findings revealed that the recurring invocation of "the devil’s work" demonstrates how language can serve as a tool for psychological evasion and manipulation during interrogations. This clause not only shifts blame to an external force but also invokes a cultural framework that resonates with both the speaker and the audience, thereby softening the perception of culpability. The study concludes that these strategies employed by suspects are not merely attempts to evade guilt; they also serve as tactics to manage the psychological pressures of the interrogation process and, importantly, to shift the burden of proof back onto law enforcement.
